Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of our frequently asked questions. If you cannot find your answer here please be sure to contact us. Thank you.
Question:
Do you adopt out?
Answer:
No. We are NOT an adoption facility or animal shelter. We are a lifetime care sanctuary only. We provide all vetting and food for our rescues through charitable donations and sponsors. NOTE: We are not taking in anymore cats at this time and hope to retire at some point. That being said; sometimes we may have cats that we cannot take in that are available and we try to get those placed. Or sometimes we have a cat that does not do well in a sanctuary as ours who will be available.
To get approved click here to fill out an adoption application. We only do Graham County, NC or surrounding areas so that we can do home inspections. If we have anything that suits what you are looking for and your application is approved we will contact you. PLEASE be sure to contact your LOCAL shelters/rescues to adopt any available cat/dog that needs a home to save more lives. They need your support.
If you are local you can also contact any of our 3 local adoption facilities; Valley River Humane Society in Marble , Paws in Bryson city, and Logans Run in Murphy, NC and now Graham County Animal Advocates. They have many cats and dogs in need of loving homes.

Question:
Can I visit The Cat Ranch?
Answer:
Yes but only with an appointment. We are not a shelter. We are a private residence and therefore are not open to the public but if you would like to come and visit please email us to set up an appointment and we will be glad to show you around.
We try to do an open house at least once a year. Check our Calendar of Events page for more information.
We also require you to sign a release waiver releasing us from any accidents, cat bites, scratches, etc that may occur. Visits are limited from 1pm to 4pm Monday-Friday by appointment ONLY unless otherwise agreed upon..
If you have children you must keep them under control at all times while at CRR or you will be asked to leave. The cats in our care do not appreciate being chased around and we do not want anyone to get hurt by a frightened animal. No animals are allowed in the sanctuary. -
Question:
Why does CRR not adopt to homes with children under age 7?
Answer:
CPR policy does not allow us to adopt any cat to families with children under 7. Most rescue groups ask families to wait until the children are 10 but we think 7 is an age when most children can understand and appreciate a feline companion.
Cats are wonderful companions for older children. Why 7? Children under 7 are growing and maturing at an amazing rate at this time in their lives. They need to concentrate all their time and attention on that growing and they need you to help. Children under 7 are also learning how to live and get along in our world and they don't yet know or understand and can discriminate between say their stuffed cat toy (which takes whatever a toddler can dish out) to the real thing, with real teeth and claws, and with the ability to be hurt and to then hurt in return. Any cat can and will scratch/bite given the right circumstances. Sadly, those circumstances often involve a young child treating the cat in a manner that is way too rough for the cat. Parents are not infallible and you cannot watch both your cat and the child 24/7. There will be interaction between the two alone so we ask that parents wait until their child is over 7 (and that's a benchmark obviously, some children take longer to grasp the concept that this animal can be hurt.) Our main concern is our cats well being and we want forever homes for them. These cats have been through a lot and we do not want them stressed out going back and forth between potential homes. Many cats end up in shelters after having scratched or bitten a child who was playing too rough with them and we are trying to prevent this situation. We thank you for your understanding.
Question:
Why does CRR require vet and personal references of adoptors?
Answer:
Our main goal is to find forever homes for our adoptable cats. Therefore we require references to verify who you are and that you can properly care for a CRR cat. We DO call your references. We do not know you and need to verify who you are and that you can properly care for one of our cats. Our cats have been through a lot and we only want experienced adopters with vet references for the well being of our cats. These cats are our family and we want the best for them.
Question:
Can The Cat Ranch take my cat if I die or become incapacitated?
Answer:

Question:
Does The Cat Ranch provide boarding services to the public?
Answer:
No. The Cat Ranch is not a boarding facility. You can find boarding facilities in your area by asking your veterinarian or looking in the Yellow Pages. Ask us about local pet care.
